Socializing

Tool: Bridging digital with physical using proximity based social network environment.

inspiration

The idea of this app came to me after I was playing basketball with a few new acquaintances. We were having a great time, however, I noticed that I didn’t have my phone to take down their numbers so that we could play again. I had to leave before them and didn’t take the effort to go back to the courts to get their numbers, leaving the friendship to chance that we would stumble upon each other again. Needless to say we all haven’t played basketball in some time and to be honest I don’t know if i would recognize them if i did see them again. This got me to thinking, how many missed friendships do we encounter in our lives? Better yet in a week?

PROCESS

While starting to get my thoughts together i quickly realized that the primary issue with the failed friendship, mentioned above, was the awkward moment it would take to get that persons contact information. This is when I started focusing on the proximity limitation of a cellphone and the act of gaining a new contact. To explore this idea I generated situations that pose different interactions amongst a variety of different people and roles within an office building.

To bring out certain concepts and issues within the system I explored this design in a world that lacked the ability to speak.

How it works

In an office building there are many different roles so I started by listing out every possible interaction that familiar and non familiar people would encounter. I also accounted for privacy and customization based on that persons particular needs and goals.

example (1): companies have private meetings where everyone is from different departments. These people often don't know each other however they need to keep outside disturbances away. This example gives everyone in the room the affordance to communicate with each other but keep outgoing and incoming interactions limited.

example (2):  in some meetings the leader needs to have the full attention of their employees but also have access to outside communication and resources.

Availability

People in a professional setting are either free to talk or they are busy. This system will allow the user to know when it is the latter.

get to the point

When a user has a certain goal when starting an interaction, this system can filter out similarities or differences to save time. In the example to the right both users are

off limits

A user could determine when sending or receiving an interaction is off limits. Like bathrooms or in business meetings.

critical priority

Certain interactions can be more critical than others. Priority can be distinguished using machine learning with an accelerometer or a gravity sensor.

design is always evolving

This design is still very much in its preliminary stages. Moving forward I want to create a study where the objective is to get to know each other without the ability to speak and having only a few simple tools to communicate.
